Travertine

Types of Stone – Travertine

Travertine is growing in popularity. Although this is an ancient stone, it has recently gained public popularity. One of the newest trends in this area is travertine tile. Travertine is a beautiful and versatile stone.

What is Travertine?

Travertine is a natural stone, like marble or limestone. It differs from these other stones, however, in every way. Travertine works as almost a natural concrete. It forms in hot springs and limestone caves. Calcium carbonate precipitates in this environment and forms the travertine.

A Durable Beauty

Because of its durable nature, travertine is a natural choice for bathrooms, patios, pool decks, and kitchen walls. In fact, many buyers seek out homes that have travertine in them. Travertine adds value to the home due to its durability and desirability.

A Colorful Option

Travertine comes in many different colors. This gorgeous stone can be gold, silver, beige, ivory, or walnut, among other colors. While the stone is generally neutral, it can have hues of pink, green, yellow, red, or gray.

The Finished Product

Travertine comes in four different finishes:

  • 1. Tumbled – This finish is often used outdoors when non-slip surfaces are required. The stone is kept porous and has an old-world, natural look.
  • Honed – With honed tiles, the pores are filled in and there is a matte finish. This indoor version is made to be stain-resistant.
  • Brushed – These tiles are very similar to tumbled tiles but do not have rounded edges.
  • Polished – These are smooth and shiny but can be very slippery, also!
